Ivory Coast and Cameroon meet in Group F’s standout fixture, a clash that already feels like a knockout tie between two of Africa’s heavyweight nations. With both sides winning their opening matches, victory here would all but secure a place in the last 16 and place the winner firmly on course to top the group.
Defending champions Ivory Coast began their title defence with a controlled but ultimately narrow 1–0 win over Mozambique. Emerse Faé’s side dominated territory and chance creation in Fez, but had to settle for a single goal as Amad Diallo struck shortly after half-time, finishing calmly after Franck Kessié’s clever header back into his path. Despite the comfortable nature of their control, the Elephants were wasteful, with Vakoun Bayo seeing two late efforts blocked and further opportunities going unconverted. The result extended their winning momentum from qualification, but also underlined that there is still room for improvement, particularly in the final third.
Cameroon were similarly efficient rather than spectacular in their opener, edging past Gabon 1–0 thanks to an early Karl Etta Eyong goal in Agadir. The Indomitable Lions struck inside the opening exchanges and then relied on defensive organisation and game management to see the contest through. While off-field turbulence dominated the build-up to the tournament, including last-minute changes on the bench, David Pagou’s side showed little sign of distraction on the pitch, producing a disciplined display that reflected their tournament know-how.
With Gabon and Mozambique facing off earlier in the day, both Ivory Coast and Cameroon will be aware that three points here would almost certainly guarantee progression. Historically, this has been a finely balanced rivalry, and with both teams carrying pace, physicality and match-winners across the pitch, this encounter promises a tactical edge as much as individual quality. Ivory Coast’s depth and ball control will be tested by Cameroon’s athleticism and transitional threat, making this one of the most compelling fixtures of the group stage.
